Who We Are

We are a large group of people who come from all over  the US and Canada who have embraced the cultural and spiritual  teachings of three full-blood American Indians; Charles Harnage "Hawk",  W. Taylor Liver, and John James Harriss. These three elders, who were  Cherokee, taught their ancient culture, ceremonies and spirituality from  records maintained by their families. Hawk was born in 1909. He spent  his youth in the Carlisle Indian School and as a farm laborer under the  Carlisle Indian School. John James was two years older than Hawk and  managed to escape the school when he was nine. Taylor was assisted by  Hawk and his brother to escape the school when he was seven.

These three men would later spend several years in  deep study of the ancient teachings taught by their families. In the  early 1930's Hawk and Taylor commenced to visit various Indian tribes  and Nations across the United States. In the 1930s they spoke to the  council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee and then later to the chief and  council of the Cherokee Nation, trying to convince them to return to  their ancient ways, culture, teachings and spirituality. At the same  time, the three began to translate their families' ancient writings into  English and began to teach any and all Indian people who wished to  listen and learn from them. Over the many years their teachings spread  to many documented natives and to those who are not documented members  of any tribe but who are of native descent. They continued to teach  until their passing. Hawk passed in 2005. John James passes in 2006.  Taylor passed in 2008.

Although our members represent seven federal Indian  Nations and seven State recognized Tribes, they also include  undocumented people who follow the ancient teachings, traditions and  spirituality.  Our members all consider themselves as ANOWA, not  belonging to any Tribe or Nation.

We also have some members of Indian lineage who fail to meet the requirements to join one of the recognized Nations or tribes. All endeavor to walk closely with and to serve our Creator, to be care takers of the Earth, to respect all animal life, and to live in harmony with Nature and all of Creation. Our people are spread across the United States and Canada. As frequently as we are able, we do try and have gatherings where our people may attend, learn, practice what they have learned, and have fellowship. Our teachings are accomplished over many closed internet groups.
